The Top 200 UK Law Firms’ Website Performance/Carbon Emission in 2023/2024

Our 2023/2024 report looks at the website performance of the Top 200 UK law firms, ranked by revenue by The Lawyer. This year, we continue to rely on the fundamental markers of website performance such as mobile and desktop page speed and Google Page Experience. But we also have a new challenge – Website Carbon Emissions.

Website carbon emissions and the environmental impact

The average website produces as much as 1.76g of CO2 for every page view (source: Website Carbon Calculator). This equates to approximately 2.1kg of CO2 emitted for every 10,000 views. The bigger and more complex a website is, the greater its negative climate impact.

We all understand the negative impact of single use plastics. However, the carbon footprint of the internet in general is something that not many are aware of or simply overlook.

Proactively reducing carbon footprint should be something that all small, medium and large organisations are thinking and caring about.

How significant is Website Performance?

Providing your prospective clients with an efficient online experience is necessary. Last year, speed and accessibility became a ranking factor for search engines – and now, we look at how doing so impacts our carbon footprint.

Law firms’ website carbon emission footprint

Modern websites may look great with all the bells and whistles. But they can also be bad for the climate. The journey of digital content from a data warehouse to your computer or mobile screen uses significant amounts of energy. And consuming it has become an integral element of our everyday lives. We use the internet to promote our businesses and to find new employees. It’s not something that we can stop, but there are ways to reduce our footprint.

Last year we informed law firms about Google’s Page Experience Deadline and how slow websites will be affected, and the results of the Top 100 UK Law Firms and their page speed.

This year, we have compiled information about the Top 200 UK Law Firms – how fast they load and how much CO2 they produce.

Slow and big websites use more energy as more time is required to load them. The slower/bigger the website, the more power it uses and therefore the more carbon it produces.

How do the top 200 UK law firm websites perform?

One of the Top 200 UK law firms produces 4.31g of CO2 every time someone visits their website. And with around 140,000 visitors a month, this means 7,237kg of CO2 is produced every year through the website.

That’s equivalent to boiling water for 980,616 cups of tea or 60,590 miles in an electric car!

How can I reduce my law firm’s website’s carbon footprint?

If your law firm’s website has been around for a few years, it is likely that you’ll have created and published hundreds of pages. Or perhaps not, but you may have some large images on your website, a video or two promoting your legal services, or pages with some legal advice that is no longer relevant.

The good news is that you can change it and reduce your website’s carbon footprint:

    • Update and audit your content; remove any out-of-date and ineffective pages – make sure its delivering on your strategy,
    • Check if the images and any other files serve a purpose and have been optimised (compressed) and saved in the relevant format,
    • Review your existing content strategy – does your content contribute to achieving you law firm’s strategy?
    • Optimise your website for search engines (SEO) to enable your visitors to find the pages they’re looking for,
    • Structure your content using meaningful title tags and headings to ensure your website can be indexed by search engines and is accessible to people using screen readers,
    • Improve your page speed and in turn improve your page experience and Google rankings.
